Since 2015, Velassaru Maldives has held an annual lucky draw which only long-serving Muslim employees are eligible to enter. The prize, a holy trip to Mecca, Saudi Arabia!
The lucky draw is limited to Muslim Maldivian team members who have completed five consecutive years of employment. The sponsorship supports every step of the winning pilgrim’s journey.
“Almost 50% of our employees are Maldivian and of Muslim faith and being able to send one of our valued team members to take part in the annual Hajj pilgrimage is a top priority for us. We believe a motivated team is essential for both productivity and employee satisfaction and our aim is to give our team members opportunities for both professional and personal growth,” said General Manager Denys Hordiienko.
Muslims around the world are encouraged to take this holy trip at least once in their lives, however, many Muslims do not have the financial means to participate, as the pilgrimage on average costs USD6000. Velassaru’s heartfelt sponsorship, which also includes spending money, offers one lucky pilgrim a chance to fulfil his deep spiritual duty. It is a powerful display of community support.
The Islamic ritual forms one of the five pillars of the Islam religion and is a 1400-year-old tradition. More than 2-million pilgrims are expected to carry out the rituals in Mecca next year and Velassaru Maldives’ lucky draw winner Abdulla Arushad, Boat Captain will be amongst the devout Hajj pilgrims.
The Hajj lucky draw took place at the resort’s Annual Recognition Staff Party held on July 26, 2024, which also marked the 15th anniversary of Velassaru Maldives and General Manager, Denys Hordiienko was on hand to do the honours.
“I am overjoyed and very grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Being able to take part in Hajj next year is a life-long dream. It gives me a chance to unite with other pilgrims from all over the world,” said Abdulla Arushad.
