In response to the escalating conflict in the Middle East and the closure of regional airspace, Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, and Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) have launched a support operation for travelers at Velana International Airport (VIA).
Flight disruptions and impact
Regional tensions led to flight cancellations across Middle Eastern carriers, including Emirates, FlyDubai, Gulf Air, Air Arabia, Etihad, and Qatar Airways.
- Saturday: 9 flights were cancelled, affecting 1,716 passengers.
- Sunday: 19 flights were cancelled, affecting 3,530 passengers.
Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim visited VIA on Sunday to oversee facilitation arrangements. Ibrahim noted that with much of the Middle Eastern airspace closed, the Maldives could see a 35% reduction in booked tourist arrivals.
Passenger support measures
VMC and partners have established a presence at the airport to assist travelers. Measures include:
- Information counters: VMC teams are manning desks 24/7 to guide passengers to alternate accommodations and provide logistical support.
- Disruption management centre: MACL established a center at VIA to manage communication and assistance.
- Accommodation: The Ministry and VMC have worked with tourist facilities to secure stay arrangements for over 1,400 passengers. The old domestic terminal is available as a rest area for those waiting at the airport.
- Essential aid: MACL has provided direct aid to 130 passengers as of Sunday night.
Operational status and passenger advice
Operations at Velana International Airport continue without changes. MACL is working to ensure services continue for all passengers.
Traveler advisory: All passengers traveling to or through the Middle East should:
- Check flight status via official airline websites or apps before going to the airport.
- Contact tour operators for rebooking and schedule updates.
- Monitor flight information at http://fis.com.mv.
VMC continues to work with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, MACL, and airlines to provide necessary support to affected visitors.
