The Maldives is seeking a record seventh consecutive win as World’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2026, as voting opens for five global titles following the destination’s recent success at the Indian Ocean regional awards.
Having held the prestigious World’s Leading Destination title for six consecutive years since 2020, the Maldives is now competing to extend its winning streak to a seventh year, reinforcing its position among the world’s most celebrated travel destinations.
Alongside the nomination for World’s Leading Destination, the Maldives is competing for World’s Leading Dive Destination, World’s Leading Green Destination and World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination, while Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) is nominated for World’s Leading Tourist Board.
The five nominations follow the Maldives’ recent success at the World Travel Awards Asia, Oceania & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony 2026, hosted at CROSSROADS Maldives, where the destination secured all four corresponding Indian Ocean titles. VMC was also named Indian Ocean’s Leading Tourist Board 2026, completing five regional victories and setting the stage for the global awards.
The Maldives’ six-year reign as World’s Leading Destination reflects its enduring international appeal, from its iconic island resorts, turquoise lagoons and marine biodiversity to the warmth of Maldivian hospitality and the diversity of experiences available across the islands. The destination continues to attract travellers seeking luxury, romance, adventure, wellness and authentic cultural experiences.
Its nominations across diving, sustainability and honeymoon tourism further reflect the breadth of the Maldives’ tourism offering. Home to vibrant coral reefs and exceptional marine life, the Maldives remains a leading destination for underwater exploration, while conservation efforts and environmentally responsible tourism practices continue to support the protection of its natural environment. Its secluded islands and intimate resort experiences have also established the Maldives as a favourite among honeymooners worldwide.
VMC’s nomination for World’s Leading Tourist Board recognises its international destination marketing efforts, industry collaborations and initiatives to maintain the Maldives’ visibility across established and emerging tourism markets.
With voting now open, Visit Maldives Corporation is encouraging Maldivians, tourism industry professionals, international partners and travellers around the world to rally behind the destination and help secure another historic victory.
Every vote counts as the Maldives competes to defend its World’s Leading Destination title for a seventh consecutive year and bring home all five global honours.
Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards recognises excellence across the international travel and tourism industry, with winners selected through votes cast by travel industry professionals and consumers worldwide.
