The Maldives has been nominated for World’s Leading Sustainable Destination 2026 at the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards (WSTHA), and is calling on travellers, tourism industry partners and supporters around the world to vote for the destination before voting closes on 21 October 2026.
The nomination recognises the Maldives’ continued efforts to advance sustainable tourism while protecting the natural environment and supporting the communities and businesses that form part of the country’s tourism industry. As a destination built around its marine environment and island ecosystems, sustainability remains closely connected to the long-term development of tourism in the Maldives.
Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) is encouraging tourism stakeholders, trade partners, local businesses, travel professionals and Maldives enthusiasts worldwide to support the destination by casting their vote and helping the Maldives earn global recognition for its sustainability efforts.
The Maldives has received several sustainability-related honours in recent years, including Indian Ocean’s Leading Green Destination title for three consecutive years from 2024 to 2026 . The destination has also continued to receive recognition across a range of tourism categories, including Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination, Leading Dive Destination and Leading Honeymoon Destination, reflecting the breadth of its tourism offering.
The World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards, launched in 2023 under the World Travel Awards portfolio, recognises organisations and destinations demonstrating leadership in environmental, social and economic sustainability across the global travel and hospitality sector.
In the World’s Leading Sustainable Destination 2026 category, the Maldives is competing alongside other nominated destinations and tourism entities, including City of Dubrovnik, Diriyah: The City of Earth, Dubai, and Serengeti National Park.
